No 1 Christian Killer: Busyness
Breaking News just out…… Christians everywhere are too busy. They are going to meetings, working long hours at stressful jobs meeting targets, they are playing hard to compensate ensuring they get to the gym or to football practice. Then at the end of the day they crash into bed and wake up late the next morning only to switch on to the all the things that have to be done, or maybe that’s just me. Yet all of my 20/30 something friends seem to be in the same situation, a situation which leaves you dry, tired and too done in to care about anyone or anything except the next job on your list.
The story of the good Samaritan is well told as a reminder that we are to care for the needy and broken people in today’s world, yet I ask myself am I so busy that I am like the Priest who didn’t stop. Lets put ourselves in his shoes for a moment…..
Pete the Priest walking down the road sees the injured man on the side of the road and has a choice to make, shall I help him? The cogs of his mind whir as he processes it, “But I’m late for that meeting, where we are praying for the needy people and that will make me late for the synagogue strategy meeting for reaching the needy. Plus if I help him that means I have to stop and talk, get dirty and unclean, then go through the ritual shower. I would love to help but I’m too busy doing more important things.â€
Are we so busy that we have lost sight of what really pleases God? Are we so busy that we have shaved time of our mornings with God? Do you want to help others but just feel to exhausted to give yourself? Do you feel that your life lacks real power? Maybe its time to put the axe to a few activities, go back refresh yourself in God’s presence and remember what really matters.
God spoke very clearly to me that he is not pleased by what we achieve but by whether we glorify him and enjoy him. Let us wait on God and recognise our need of his power to keep us walking in the spirit.
Maybe going to that meeting is only pleasing others??? Have a Break, Have a Quiet Time……
